Novice Journal

A little this – a little that!

Photo Op: Ah, How I Miss Roxie

Just when I thought I had posted them all, I stumbled across more pics of Roxanne! I must have gone photo crazy before she left. But I’m not complaining 🙂 So here’s another photo from our outdoor photo shoot. This one had to be taken at the beginning because she’s got her “timid face” on. I remember it took her forever to accept me chasing her around with the camera.

Happy Friday everyone!

Gotta love a sweetheart Rottweiler!

Photo Op: Tranquility

This is my semi-wish for the weekend 🙂

(This is one of those “set-up” pics where I take an object and try to find a cool background for it. I took this…what I think is a mini-tile-thingy, and placed it on my mailbox. Strange, but true!)

Photo Op: Handful of Petals

While I wish the petals were clearer as the subject, this shot (and it’s edits) didn’t turn out so bad.

Photo Op: Kangaroo

Last time I went to the zoo, I was able to snag this shot and a few similar ones. All the kangaroos were so sleepy!

P.S. This is my 200th post! One word: stoked!

Photo Op: A Bug….plus, NovJ’s got a page!

Hey all!

Big news! Novice Journal has certainly taken off to new heights! I wanted to do something big (or what I think is big) to celebrate recent accomplishments and to push myself further. It’s strange and exciting all at the same time. So here’s a shoutout to all of you with facebook – NovJ’s got a page! So, look at the below picture of a bug, then scroll down, and find the facebook page link (it should be to the right) and click like! This page is brand new – as in created TODAY – so we’ll see how far it gets. Thanks to all of you who do!

As for the rest of you, thanks for stopping by! And enjoy this pic of a bug….because it’s all I’ve got at the moment. Still, it looks pretty cool!

Photo Op: My favorite pastime (other than eating cookies)

I took a second to evaluate how much I’ve changed when it comes to photography. I used to think “so you snapped a picture of what’s in front of you, big whoop.” Now, I’m completely changed. Everything is a photo op, and editing photos can take up hours of my time. I’ve got at least three online folders bulging with thousands of pics inside. And take this pic for example. I took it with my Nikon Coolpix camera – at several different angles – and then uploaded it to my computer. Then I sent it to my iphone for edits – two different apps, mind you – and sent it back. Then I gave it a final touch on my computer, and then I uploaded it here. Phew!  All in all, it was still fun to create! Get it!? The pun? I said cre-…and it’s right…ah never mind.

Plus, I just realized that it fits this week’s wordpress photo challenge 🙂

Would You Rather? (again?)

Hey all!

I’m glad you’ve all been enjoying the pics, as they’ve been coming in like CRAZY. As long as you keep liking them, I will keep posting them.

Quick week sum up – it’s been a wonderful week! When I started this blog, I gave myself the crazy goal of reaching 800 followers in June. Thanks to all of you, it’s happened! (This is the part where if I was really tech savvy, confetti would pour down from the top of the screen.) Again, thank you! It’s a pretty epic achievement that I couldn’t have done alone…(unless I made 800 different gravatars and just followed myself – which is just creepy.)

Song of the week: Big Time, by Peter Gabriel. (The song is stuck in my head at the moment.)

Today, we take a break from the pics, and play a game! Yes, I know, it’s been forever and a day since we’ve last played one. So this one’s going to be easy. You don’t have to come up with something oober creative, just click the button that calls out you – no there’s no sound installed in the buttons, sheesh. And once I get around to it, I’ll post up my answers too. Have fun playing! 🙂

Photo Op: Project Web

I’m a novice in the photo field, but here’s my two cents on this photo project 🙂

“I’ve just about had enough of this oogling at spider webs. I’m going to get a photo.” – that was my thought process yesterday afternoon.  So I marched outside to the newly spun web on the back porch, aimed my camera, and snapped. My camera got a gorgeous pic of the grass in the backyard, without a spec of web to be seen. That took me by surprise, so I snapped again, and again, at different angles, with dark and light backgrounds, and every pic had one thing in common – no web. Then my twin suggested I take a cup of water and (with my hands) sprinkle some drops on the web. Genius!  I did it, but only a couple drops stuck. So, I got one of these:

Spray bottles: perfect for making gentle mists.

I sprayed, placed it off by a chair, walked back over to the web, positioned my camera, and frowned. The droplets were gone. I repeated all the steps (including the frown) before I noticed that here I stood, in 96 degree weather. The water was going to dry fast no matter how hard I sprayed.

Lesson 1: Keep your water source close….especially in the summer. Obvious, yes, but somehow I had to learn that through trial and error.

I got frustrated after my tenth pic revealed (yet again) the side of my house. Super clear, but not what I was looking for.

Lesson 2: Don’t give up! Have fun, and get creative 🙂

I couldn’t give up and miss out on a wicked sweet shot. While I was messing around with the controls on my camera, the owner of the web (a gorgeous, medium sized spider) came out to inspect the web. I fumbled around with the camera and got…nothing. Not even the spider. That’s when I knew I should make a project out of all this. In the end, I will walk away with a picture of a clear web, and a spider to top it. Who knows how long it’s going to take me to get this pic?! It could end up being years from now! But it seems like a great way to improve my photography skills. Don’t worry, I’ll also take pics of other things and post them up on my blog. Who wants to see a bunch of blurry photos all the time? While I didn’t get anything epic, I did inadvertently water the nearby strawberry plants:

Not what I was aiming for, but that’s one thing off the checklist. For now, I leave you with the best out of the bunch, in hopes that this will be NOTHING compared to my grand finale!

The spider had been so kind to let me spend a good while spraying his web, so I gave it all a break for the day. 🙂

Got any web pic tips? I’d be happy to hear em!

-Ray

Photo Op: S’mores

This little kitty has been chilling in my backyard for quite some time now. I’m not complaining, he…or she takes care of any mice that might want to “scout the house.” This fluffy semi-pet’s name? S’mores. Yup, came up with that one yesterday. This pic came out pretty clear for being behind glass. I thought he/she looked so cute sleeping on the back deck 🙂

P.S. Happy first day of summer everyone!!! Cheers to cold lemonade!

Photo Op: Fresh from the Rain

I’ve always loved photos where plants still have little rain droplets on them. So yesterday when when I saw these outside, I ran to grab my iphone (wasn’t sure where my camera had gone off to hiding…)
